MANY of us missed this Marathon (or Race) last year because it didn't take place in Kampala and wasn't televised live with politicians on either end of the lane, but it went ahead to win some much-coveted international recognition at the 2016 UK Running Awards.
And where last year's inaugural race gathered runners from every Continent on earth, this year Uganda will host over 200 international runners all converging in Masaka for the June 5, 2016 event, alongside at least 2,000 Ugandans.
The prizes for winning participants are small, just as the entry fees are (Ushs10,000 - US$3 - for non-students and Ushs5,000 - US$1.5 - for students), but the race proceeds will go towards the support of community based organisations in the greater Masaka area. Projects beneficiaries range from disadvantaged children, unemployed youth, disabled individuals, people affected by HIV, street children and the elderly. To ensure sustainability of the projects, the funding is used to support the creation of income generating programs.
The Uganda Tourism Board is backing the race, as it tends to bring in large numbers of enthusiastic, sports-loving tourists, and we applaud them for doing so. Last year's race raised £74,500 for projects in Masaka - and this year should yield much, much more.
We believe the runners that fly in to participate in the race will get taken out to the many great spots we have for bird watching, game viewing drives, sport fishing, boat rides, mountain climbing, gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, and more.
